BSc Sociology

Het is een driejarige, voltijdse opleiding, bestaande uit 120 studiepunten per jaar. Je studeert zes modules van 20 studiepunten per jaar. Elk jaar bevat een aantal optionele modules waarmee je je studie kunt afstemmen op je eigen interesses en vaardigheden. Het eindklassement dat je krijgt, is gebaseerd op de cijfers die je haalt in de modules die je in jaar twee en drie volgt.

Year One

In het eerste jaar volg je vijf kernmodules van 20 studiepunten. Deze zijn bedoeld om u kennis te laten maken met de belangrijkste ideeën en onderzoeken in de sociologie en om u de vaardigheden te leren die nodig zijn om te slagen op de universiteit. Je krijgt ook de mogelijkheid om vanuit de school nog een module van 20 studiepunten te volgen om de volledige 120 studiepunten te halen die je nodig hebt om jaar één te voltooien.

In the first year, you will meet your personal tutor who will help you to make the transition to higher education and support you throughout your time with us.

Year Two

In jaar twee volg je drie kernmodules van 20 studiepunten. Deze kernmodules zullen zich richten op hedendaagse ongelijkheden, sociale theorie en sociaalwetenschappelijke onderzoeksmethoden. Je selecteert ook drie optionele modules van 20 studiepunten uit een selectie uit de sociale wetenschappen. Er is ook een kredietdragende plaatsingsmodule beschikbaar. Uw persoonlijke docent zal beschikbaar zijn om u te helpen bij het kiezen van modules die het beste aansluiten bij uw interesses en toekomstige carrièrekeuzes.

In this year you will also have the opportunity to consider transferring onto a four-year programme, spending your third year on a professional work placement or studying abroad, returning to Cardiff to complete your studies in the fourth year.

Year Three

Je laatste jaar zal je kennis consolideren en je in staat stellen onderwerpen te blijven verkennen die het beste aansluiten bij je toekomstige carrièreambities en interesses.

Je hebt ook de mogelijkheid om een proefschriftproject van 40 studiepunten uit te voeren, waarbij je een kleinschalig onderzoeksproject ontwerpt, uitvoert en schrijft onder toezicht van een lid van het academisch personeel.

How Will I Be Assessed?

All modules are assessed by at least two different assessment tasks. Typical assessment formats include individual and group assignments, coursework, presentations and exams. We take care to ensure that all degree schemes include a range of different assessment types and that deadlines are spread throughout the academic year.

Feedback is provided on assessments and other learning in order to provide students with the opportunity to reflect on their current or recent level of attainment. It can be provided individually or to groups. It can take many forms. It is responsive to the developmental expectations of our programmes and disciplines.

The range of feedback includes one-to-one individual feedback; generic feedback; peer feedback; informal feedback; and self-evaluation to submit along with the assessment.

Academic staff and peers can use a variety of methods to deliver these types of feedback: written feedback; annotation of a text; oral feedback; and seminar discussion.

On successful completion of the Programme you will be able to demonstrate:

• Bestaande kennis, wetenschap en onderzoek in de sociologie kritisch evalueren en deze kennis gebruiken om tot een evenwichtig oordeel te komen over de verdiensten en relevantie van concurrerende claims en theoretische perspectieven
• Critically evaluate the use of evidence in social science disciplines and policy debates, drawing on both broad methods of training and subject-specific knowledge
• Gebruik kennis en vaardigheden om sociale verschijnselen die van belang zijn voor de sociologie te begrijpen en uit te leggen en dit begrip toe te passen op nieuwe of nieuwe vragen.

Professional Practical Skills

On successful completion of the Programme you will be able to demonstrate:

• Design and use a range of data collection instruments needed to explore and understand the social world
• Critically evaluate, synthesise and interpret primary and secondary data generated using different methods, using specialist software where necessary
• Work both collaboratively and individually on theoretically informed and empirically grounded projects that draw on appropriate and relevant research evidence

Transferable/Key Skills

On successful completion of the Programme you will be able to demonstrate:

• The capacity for problem-solving and originality in thinking by using knowledge and skills to tackle familiar and unfamiliar problems
