Migration, terrorism, climate change, economic stability, and international crime – these are all examples of social challenges that local, national and international organisations in the public sector face and try to manage. In this Bachelor’s programme, you will learn how to research, analyse, and contribute to strategies to manage these challenges.
What you will learn
Our programme is a diverse one. You will follow courses in public policy, international law, sociology, economics, political science and management. These courses will enable you to analyse social challenges from different perspectives. Thus you will learn to understand the various roles, perceptions and interests of relevant actors.

What is the programme about?
Migration, pandemics, terrorism, climate change, economic stability, and international crime – these are all examples of social challenges that local, national and international organisations in the public sector face and try to manage. In this bachelor programme, you will learn how to research, analyse, and contribute to strategies for public sector organizations to manage these challenges.
We focus on social challenges that are:
- Multi-disciplinary: they have political, economic, legal and social aspects;
- Multi-level: they involve actors and networks at the international, national, regional and local levels.
- International: they surpass geographical and administrative borders.
Our programme is a diverse one. You will follow courses in public policy, international law, sociology, economics, political science and management. These courses will enable you to analyse social challenges from different perspectives. Thus you will learn to understand the various roles, perceptions and interests of relevant actors. Furthermore, you will follow courses in research methods to acquire the skills and knowledge that are necessary to research the management of social challenges.
An international programme
The bachelor programme Management of International Social Challenges truly is an international programme. The programme is taught exclusively in English to a diverse student body from all over the world. Over 60% of our students are from countries other than the Netherlands. By choosing the Bachelor Management of International Social Challenges, you are not only looking beyond borders in your studies, but you will also become part of an international network of peers. Your fellow students help you to acquire different perspectives on the issues discussed throughout the bachelor programme.
At the end of the programme, you will be able to answer questions such as:
- How the impact of globalisation on culture and society can be evaluated;
- Why certain problems are on the political agenda and others are not;
- How migration policies can steer international migration flows;
- How technological change affects public organisations;
- How to design and conduct social research.

Het studieprogramma in een notendop
In het eerste jaar van het MISOC-programma maak je kennis met het management van internationale maatschappelijke uitdagingen door inleidende cursussen te volgen op het gebied van beleid, management & organisatie, onderzoeksmethoden en de kerndisciplines (zoals economie en recht).
In het tweede jaar volg je geavanceerde cursussen op het gebied van openbaar beleid, management en onderzoeksmethoden, evenals cursussen die je meer achtergrondinformatie geven over het beheer van internationale sociale uitdagingen.
In het derde jaar ga je je specialiseren door ervoor te kiezen een minor uit een aangrenzend vakgebied te volgen, op uitwisseling te gaan of stage te lopen bij een relevante organisatie in binnen- of buitenland. Daarnaast volg je gespecialiseerde vakken in mondiaal bestuur, maar ook vakken in democratisch bestuur, en aan het eind van het jaar (en programma) laat je zien wat je hebt geleerd door een bachelorscriptie te schrijven over een relevant onderwerp.

This programme provides you with an excellent basis to pursue a career in local, national or international organisations in the public sector that deal with international social challenges. After graduating from the Management of International Social Challenges bachelor programme you will:
- have acquired theoretical knowledge about the management of international social challenges;
- in staat zijn om internationale maatschappelijke uitdagingen en strategieën te onderzoeken en analyseren om deze te beheren;
- be able to design and conduct research in accordance with academic standards;
- in staat zijn om een masterdiploma te behalen in een gerelateerd vakgebied; de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam biedt verschillende masteropleidingen aan in de bestuurskunde en sociologie;
- receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration.
Een masterdiploma in een van deze vakgebieden, gecombineerd met het diploma Public Administration dat u behaalde na het afronden van het MISOC-programma, biedt u de nodige vaardigheden en kennis voor uw carrière. U kunt beleidsadviseur, consultant, ambtenaar, onderzoeker of analist worden bij nationale en internationale publieke en private organisaties zoals de Verenigde Naties, het Europees Parlement, het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, universiteiten, adviesbureaus of NGO's.
